Our Story

How It Started

For over 75 years, the name Modern Electric Appliances has echoed in the streets of Somerset West, serving and supplying its residents and neighbouring towns and cities with household appliances, beds & furniture. Despite a few name alterations over the years, the name Modern remains a prominent and trusted identity for many of our customers.

Back in 1976, Mr. G.J (Boet) Lourens founded Bergzicht Meubels in Stellenbosch after many years of experience in the industry: as manager of Lewis Stores Stellenbosch and later on as the Regional Manager for Lewis Stores in the Western Cape. But, the Lourens Family’s legacy does not end in Stellenbosch. They set their vision high on expanding and purchased Modern Electrical Appliances from Mr. Harry Groll in 1995.

Next Steps

The company continued to prosper over the years, managing to extend their reach and establish their identity in towns as far as Caledon and Hermanus to Wellington and Paarl and the City of Cape Town. In 2006, Modern was facing challenge. The lease for the building they were in was coming to an end and would not get renewed. This blessing in disguise forced Modern to take a leap of faith and they purchased their own building in Lourensford Road, where it is situated today.

After the retirement and passing of Mr. Boet Lourens, his legacy still continues with his sons, Josh and Deon running Modern Electric Appliances and Andre and Jacques, together with his son in law, Christoff Schreuder at. Bergzicht Meubels (situated in Stellenbosch). We take great pride in how far we have come and we know that our efforts have honoured those who have come before us.
